ACO Marine Unveils New Clarimar MF to Meet Upcoming IMO MEPC 277(64) Wastewater Rules

ACO Marine, a leading supplier of advanced wastewater treatment systems, has introduced a new version of its established Clarimar wastewater treatment range to meet new effluent standard and sampling requirements due to enter into force on 1 January 2016.

The next generation ACO Clarimar MF® sewage treatment system has been specifically developed to meet IMO Resolution MEPC 227(64) (excluding Section 4.2) without using chemicals or chlorine in the treatment process.

Speaking today at the global launch of the new system, during the SMM event in Hamburg, ACO Marine, Managing Director Mark Beavis, said: “The ACO Clarimar MF® has been designed as a cost-effective, robust wastewater treatment solution for the commercial marine market, including all types of cargo, offshore and specialist vessels.”

Fully type-approved by Bureau Veritas to meet MEPC 227(64) and EC MED module B, the ACO Clarimar MF® is a plug and play system manufactured using ACO Composite PPFR GREY, a durable polymer material.

It combines ACO Marine’s extensively researched and developed ACO-MF filtration technology with the company’s new patented ACO ‘bio-sword’, a self-cleaning filtration element that effectively treats a ship’s wastewater to well below the mandatory levels.

Tests have confirmed that the ACO Clarimar MF® can reduce Coliform Bacteria to 25/100ml, TSS to <14mg/l, BOD to <3mg/l, and COD to <25mg/l.

“By combining these two unique technologies we have been able to remove the settling and chlorination stages found in more traditional biological wastewater treatment systems. Disinfection of the treated effluent is by in-line mounted UV lamp with no requirement for chemicals in any part of the ACO MF process,” said Beavis.

“The use of the new ‘bio sword has enabled us to reduce the volume of the activation chamber and overall footprint of the system without impacting the capacity and performance of the unit. It is completely unaffected by ship movement and vibration and requires little maintenance. The only consumable is the filtration ‘sock’, which needs changing about every three months,” Beavis added.

The new ACO Clarimar MF® range has the capacity to treat up to 37 800 litres of ship generated wastewater per day.

Clean water from the mixed wastewater in the activation chamber is drawn through the ACO-MF ‘bio-sword’ by the effluent discharge pump (an optional standby unit is available) and discharged either directly overboard or can be recycled for re-use as technical fresh water. The treated effluent water is colourless and odourless.

Manufactured entirely in the EU from high performance materials which, unlike coated black steel, is completely corrosion resistant and light weight, the system’s modular design affords simple installation and requires only one power connection.

From an operational perspective it is though to have the lowest running costs of any sewage treatment plant on the market.

Further type-approval testing to confirm compliance with MEPC 277(64) Section 4.2 will take place this December as part of the development of the Maripur NF® MBR advanced wastewater treatment plant.
