Problem-solving: addressing island and mid-sized port fuel challenges
The inaugural Bunkering & Sustainability Forum 2025 is designed to examine how island and mid-sized ports are preparing for the maritime energy transition. Some are well prepared and have committed to large investments, while others are still doing nothing, waiting for shipowners or regulators to make their decisions for them. But many more are somewhere in between.
This ground-breaking event, hosted by the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will examine the current and future availability of traditional and alternative fuels at island and mid-sized ports, and the infrastructure and maritime facilities required to support them. For such ports, a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to fuel supply – both conventional and emerging – is not practical. Many do not have a local fuel supply and must import 100% of their fuel needs. While storage and delivery facilities for traditional fuels are generally available, this is not yet the case for new fuels such as LNG, methanol, biofuels, and ammonia. And what are they doing about installing shore power?
As global demand for these alternative fuels rises, islands and smaller ports must plan strategically to ensure access to appropriate energy sources without wasting resources on options that may not be viable or necessary for their specific context.
BASF25 aims to bring together similar bunkering hubs – and the bunker buyers and suppliers that operate there – to share insights, challenges, and solutions related to the energy transition in maritime fuel supply.
The latest companies to register include:
Baleària, Suardiaz, Moeve, Peninsula, Shell, Lloyd’s Register, Inchcape Shipping Services, TFG Marine, AYK Energy, Bunkeroil …
Sign up to the Alternative Fuels Training Course
BASF25 will feature a one-day intensive course that looks at the potential benefits of using alternative fuels in the marine industry – and the reality of where the industry is now, and what practical steps will have to be taken to deliver the energy transition. The pros and cons of all the key alternative fuels will be weighed up, with a detailed focus on production, transportation, storage and delivery.
Taught by industry expert Nigel Draffin, this unique course on the future of bunkering will have plenty to offer both industry veterans and newcomers.
Join the Port Tour
A highlight of BASF25 will be the tour of the port and sheltered anchorage of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on board a catamaran that will sail past the port’s bunkering infrastructure, including active barges delivering traditional fuels and LNG to ships in port and at anchor. The tour will end with a special lunch reception at the exclusive Real Club Nautico de Tenerife
